Bison in their paddock at Buffalo Pound

Campfires and bonding...

A quintessential feature of camping is having a fire... and Buffalo Pound Eco Lodge provides fire pits at each site, with seating and amenities so you can fully enjoy that aspect of your adventure.

Over the course of a lifetime often some of our fondest memories can be forged while sitting around a campfire with friends and family. In fact, this author has had some very fond memories of bonding around a campfire with people I had never even met before.

All of our units have barbeques for cooking, and potable water for drinking, cooking, and washing. So, it isn't necessary to have a campfire. However, in our humble opinion... campfires offer a primeval magic that brings people together and provides a perfect venue for story-telling and bonding.  Campfires are strong welcoming spaces.  They are also necessary for cooking marshmallows, hotdogs, and smores. We'll have supplies available (if you didn't bring your own).

Many Canadians gain fire-making skills on outdoor excursions with family, or through youth organizations of various types (Scouts, Girl Guides, 4-H, School, et cetera). Of course, survival courses usually include fire making instruction and to survive in the wild this skill enables people to obtain a source of heat along with an ability to cook food, as well as to heat & sterilize water. Unfortunately, a lot of folks never get a chance to develop campfire making skills and they generally rely on others to stoke the fires for them.  The people who are adept at this skill often have very specific ways they prefer to start and maintain fires. They can be extremely fussy about how this "art-form" needs to be carried out, and they are consistently more than willing to provide instruction!  Their fire making skills have often been passed down from one generation to another... So, it's best not to question those tactics and traditions. The ancestors of the owners of Buffalo Pound Eco Lodge congregated around campfires during the great bison migrations that used to happen across the prairies. We can only imagine how amazing that phenomenon would have been.

If nobody in your group has developed campfire making skills, there are written online instructions here and a video available here (from Parks Canada)...these will enable you to achieve mastery. Our staff can also provide advice or tools to assist guests to start and maintain their fires.

So when you come to Buffalo Pound Eco Lodge be ready to develop a campfire, tell stories, and bask under the stars within the beauty of the natural world.

Book now and make sure you don't miss warming your soul around the fire!!
